The Boomtown Rats played their first U.S. show in more than 25 years on Friday night, taking the stage at New York City's Terminal 5 for Smithwick's Presents the Big Session. During the show, the Irish punk band, who originally broke up in the mid-1980s, revisited their somber 1979 hit "I Don't Like Mondays."  Live Aid 1985: The Day the World Rocked Despite the dark content of the song, which was inspired by a school shooting, the performance turned into a warm crowd singalong, with a chorus of cheers erupting during the dramatic pause after the line, "the lesson today is how to die."  Frontman Bob Geldof spoke with Rolling Stone about the Rats' reunion in 2013, when the band first reunited for shows in the U.K., Ireland and the U.A.E. Although he observed that the sour economic conditions that originally gave rise to bands like his were repeating themselves three decades later, he questioned whether rock could have the same social impact today. "The rock & roll era has passed," he said. "It’s over. So [our reunion] won’t have, I think, the same sort of cultural value. It’ll have a nostalgic value, I guess, but that’s not good enough for me. I would like it to be about these times now, addressing 18-year-olds. A rock festival shouldn’t be a middle-class outing, it should be a gathering of the clans, with intent."  The Boomtown Rats will play one more U.S. show at Boston's Royale on Sunday night before heading to the U.K. for a string of tour dates running through November. The band is also set to release a new compilation called So Modern: The Boomtown Rats Collection on October 13th. Jay Z and Beyoncé may have just wrapped up their On the Run tour earlier this month, but the pair aren't finished sharing the stage yet. During his headlining performance at the Global Citizen Festival on Saturday, the rapper brought his wife out as a surprise guest for two songs in the couple's New York hometown. Beyoncé made a dramatic entrance onto the Central Park stage to close out Jay Z's set, delivering her take on Justin Timberlake's vocal parts for "Holy Grail." After finishing that number, Jay Z rallied the audience with an acknowledgment of the event's poverty-fighting mission: "If you're committed to this Global Citizen movement, we need lighters, lighters, lighters, lighters!" With that, the pair launched into "Young Forever," to which Jay Z added some further exhortations to the cause. "We're gonna end extreme poverty by 2030! It's on you, New York City!" The rapper's call for individual efforts echoes the ethos of the concert's hosts, the Global Poverty Project, which offers 80 percent of its festival tickets free to those who participate in poverty-related activism through its online platform. "Change only takes place when and where there is action," Jay Z said in a statement earlier this summer. "I'm joining the 2014 Global Citizen Festival because I believe through actions, whether it be by raising awareness, getting involved or educating ourselves, the goal to end extreme poverty by 2030 is possible." Saturday's concert had another notable guest appearance in store. During No Doubt's set, Sting joined the band onstage to perform the Police hit "Message in a Bottle." On Friday, Hulu Plus made available doer-of-literally-everything James Franco's NYU thesis film, "Saturday Night," a documentary on what goes on behind-the-scenes each week on "Saturday Night Live." And though it may be more of a fly-on-the-wall look at the process rather than anything particularly in-depth, there was still plenty of interesting stuff to learn for anyone who's a fan of the long-running sketch comedy series.

Lifetime offered viewers a first look at its Aaliyah biopic this weekend, releasing a brief, 15-second trailer that shows its new star, Alexandra Shipp, taking on the role of the late R&B singer. Aaliyah: 1979-2001 While the short trailer shows little more than a moody glimpse of Shipp undertaking some of Aaliyah's distinctive choreography and channeling her fashion and attitude, it also offers some reassurance that the production is back on track after a rocky start earlier this summer. At the end of the clip comes a note that Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B will premiere on Saturday, November 15th. In late June, the production was put on hold after Disney Channel star Zendaya Coleman announced that she was dropping out of the title role. Shortly before that, Aaliyah's relatives had raised objections to the project, criticizing it for "disregarding the families and dishonoring the legacies of celebrated figures who have passed on." The film, based on Christopher John Farley's biography Aaliyah: More Than a Woman, will follow the singer from her debut on Star Search at the age of 10 through her untimely death in a plane crash at 22. By mid-July, Lifetime announced that Shipp, best known for her role in the Nickelodeon mystery series House of Anubis, had signed on to play Aaliyah. The following month, the network cast newcomers Chattrisse Dolabaille and Izaak Smith in the role of Aaliyah collaborators Missy Elliott and Timbaland. Shipp also has a part in the upcoming N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton. Related Aaliyah Biopic Will Include R. No Doubt played their first show in two years on Saturday at the Global Citizen Festival in New York's Central Park. During the band's encore, Sting took the stage to trade lines and harmonize with Gwen Stefani on their cover of the Police's 1979 jam "Message in a Bottle." Watch Sting Perform 'The Last Ship' at 2014 Tony Awards It's not the first time the former Police frontman has performed the song with Stefani. During the halftime show at the 2003 Super Bowl, the two collaborated on the tune to close out the event. This year's Global Citizen Festival, which also featured performances from Jay Z, Carrie Underwood, Tiësto, the Roots and fun. marks the third annual concert for the Global Poverty Project. The event seeks to raise awareness and provoke action to combat extreme poverty across the world as the United Nations General Assembly meets in New York. "It's a great way to get us back on stage," No Doubt co-founder and bassist Tony Kanal told Rolling Stone over the summer. "It was such an honor to be asked to play this particular concert. It's unacceptable that over 1 billion people live in extreme poverty, and it's got a pretty eclectic lineup, which reflects the event's true spirit of diversity." In Other No Doubt news, the band were just announced as headliners for the U.S. launch of the Rock in Rio festival, set to take place in Las Vegas over two weekends in May 2015. As for Sting, his musical The Last Ship will have its Broadway debut at the Neil Simon Theater on October 26th.
